During the national elections of 2010 I became very tired of listening to political rhetoric. The messages were so Black and White, like a horse with blinders.  I have a great fear of voters who sharing that kind of tunnel vision. I much prefer term employed in Thinking in Shades of Gray.  Weighing the options and establishing your own personal conclusions.

"You Can't Get There From Here"

You Can’t Get There From Here is pretty self explanatory.  How often have you asked for directions, especially in small European towns where the narrow village roads were never built to accommodate modern day traffic, and about half way through realized you are even more confused?  Sometimes it might just be easier to say- you can’t get there from here.

Waiting for Summer & Purple Anemone

I painted from a photo I took last summer of chard

in the garden.  I was just going to call it  "Chard", and  then

"Swiss Chard",  and then "Rainbow Chard",  but it didn't have any yellow or orange.  And then, I began to get so hungry looking at it, I called it:  "Waiting for Summer".

And while I'm still waiting for spring, I painted, "Purple Anemone", one of the first bulbs to come up in my garden .  Acrylic on canvas 14 x 11

Bluebirds and Night Bird

Hummingbirds & Flight of the Rufus were painted for the Small Birds Show at the Corner Gallery in Everett.  I had a desire to do something with a heron, but had to rethink much smaller.  I decided to paint the little Hummingbirds who swarm our feeders each spring and summer.  We’ve put up one feeder for the Annas and another for the Rufus, but there’s still a lot of fighting. One little guy sits up on the gutter and dive bombs intruders.  I’ve named him “The Sentinel”.
I used an impressionistic realism for the Annas, but a much more abstract realism for the Rufus hoping to convey the velocity of their flight patterns.

Both paintings are 10 x 8 acrylic on canvas.

Morning on the Beach

An acrylic on canvas 16 x 20 based on a beautiful 

sky and water photo from a friend. I have moved 

the boy and dog in to the foreground and added 

the stack of logs. It looks so much like a quiet 

Whidbey Island morning.

Heron in the Rain

Heron in the Rain  I had wanted to paint a heron for some time, but kept putting it off.  Then one day I met him .  He was just standing on the side of the road staring in the car at me and I knew it was time.  It was a typical misty moisty rainy day and the heron was standing in the runoff water puddle on the side of the road while the rain continued to pour down from above.  His expression seemed a bit grumpy.  I wanted to take him  home and dry him off.  But I’m sure he had other ideas.

The  Heron has flown to a beautiful home.
