Floating Worlds

Last work of 2012, waiting for varnish.
"Floating Worlds"
Acryllic Collage
36 x 18 Canvas

In Japanese myth there was a koi who decided to swim upstream to attain enlightenment. As the koi travelled it encountered many obstacles and as it overcame each one, it grew stronger despite of the unrelenting rivers downstream current. The koi struggled onward and eventually crested the mighty waterfall know as the Dragons Gate.
The God’s smiled down in approval and transformed the exhausted koi into a shining golden dragon. The koi now joyfully spends his days chasing pearls of wisdom across the skies of the vast and eternal heavens.

Whenever another koi finds the strength and courage to leap up the falls, he or she becomes a heavenly dragon too.   Koi have become  symbols of worldly aspiration and advancement, of overcoming adversity and fulfilling one’s destiny. They stand for courage and the ability to attain high goals.

Weather Change

Coming home the other evening I saw the strangest cloud formation.  I realized it was the cooler rain clouds of fall pushing out the last of the fair weather.
Had our first frost last night, guess I got this done just at the right time.

Evening Snow

Painting to get ready for the December show at WICA, "Winter Inspired" I have used pastel colored watercolor paper and drawn a back drop of deciduous trees in ink with acrylic detailing trying to create the feeling of a light snowfall at twilight.  The evenings are beginning to come earlier every day.

Fall's Final Fling

A reworking of an older painting for the "Colors of Autumn" show at Artworks Gallery.
Acrylic collage on canvas

Fall’s Final Fling
As it begins to darken, a little sooner each day
We feel summer slipping, further away.
Autumn surrounds us
And we savor the vivid hues of natures final fall gifts.

Our gardens are filled with Asters and Chrysanthumus
Dragonflies weave through the drifting leaves,
Soon we’ll hear the rhythmic music of soft fall showers,
The season of gray days will be on us.

The unframeable chrysanthemum portrays the futility of the human effort
 to control nature.

Featured Artist for August

Had a great opening of "Flights of Fancy" at  Artworks Gallery last night. Thanks to all my friends who attended.

Featured Artists for August

Acrylic and mixed media artists Judith Burns will be Artworks Gallery's featured artist for August.  Her exhibit, "Flights of Fancy" will be featured at the Frist Friday reception, August 3 from 5-8.  Live music will be provided by violinist Bev Heising. Wine tasting is available and light snacks will be served.

While living on Whidbey I have been fascinated by it's variety of birds.  From the small hummingbirds that flock to my back porch, to the large herons I see on the edge of the road, I try to capture in color and collage the beauty of these feathered inhabitants who share Whidbey with us.

In a Golden Wood

A Friend gave me a beautiful wooden textile stamp and I had to play with it.  Look carefully and you'll find it worked into the background.

“Reverence” curator Cary Jurriaans says this about the art show:

Earl Lasher • Pamela Mathues • Claudia Pettis • David Price
Phyllis Ray • Sandy Rubini • Deborah Short • Pat McVay

Sunrise at Clonmacnoise
Carraig Phadraig

Clonmacnoise  was founded in Co. Offaly on the Shannon River by St. Ciaran in the 540’s A.D..
One of the monasteries most famous products of its scriptorium was the book of Dun Cow (Lebor na hUidre), the earliest known example of literature written in the Irish language.

The year we visited there had been a lot of rain causing the Shannon to flood.

Carraig Phadraig
Acrylic on Canvas 11 x 14

Carraig Phadraig or Rock of Cashel is reputed to be the site of the conversion of the King of Munster by St. Patrick in the 5th century.  One of Ireland’s early kings, Brian Boru, reigned from Cashel, where he was a noted patron of the arts.
It is an amazing site.  As we drove North on a very flat road all of a sudden a huge hill appears in front of us with it's incredible buildings.
